The goals of this thesis were to translate two chapters from the source text (ST) into Estonian, and to compile a relevant analysis. The thesis is divided into two chapters that correspond to these goals. The ST is a textbook on argumentation and legal reasoning, written at times in somewhat of an informal style. The analysis begins with a description of how the “commission”, albeit hypothetical, was set out for the translation. From a socio-cultural standpoint, the ST represents the common law tradition, whereas the target text (TT) would most probably be read by an audience more acquainted with the civil law tradition. Acknowledging such a profound difference 125 between the ST and the presumed TT readership is central to the translation, and it remains a core issue throughout the analysis.et
