Imaginations of Paradise and Hell in Descriptions of Near-Death Experiences: a Comparison with Conventional Christian Imagery

Abstract

This thesis explores near-death experiences by analysing 100 „exceptional“ cases from the nderf.org database. The study compares recurring themes and symbols in NDEs with traditional Christian views of Heaven and Hell. Using qualitative coding and statistical analysis, the research identifies patterns like light, tunnels, and love, highlighting overlaps and divergences with Christian theology. While some parallels exist, the findings emphasize the unique and deeply personal nature of NDEs, often exceeding biblical descriptions. The study underscores the complexity of interpreting NDEs and opens doors for further interdisciplinary exploration of this fascinating phenomenon.
