Abstract
Description
The purpose of this thesis is to find out which are the values and attitudes
represented in the children’s magazine Täheke in 1987 and 2004 and by comparing the
two years, point out how the values and attitudes have altered in time.
I used content analysis as the method of the study, and coded 97 texts units in all
(45 texts units dating 1987 and 52 text units dating 2004).
The results show that in comparison with the year 1987, in the magazine issues of
2004, more modern and postmodern values occurred, but the representation of
socialisating and educative values was remarkable in both years.
There is a tendency that children are becoming less normative-aware and
judgemental in their texts altogether, grown-ups tend to give more positive judgements
and remarkably less negative judgements.
Apparently the magazine Täheke is becoming more child-centered, more
optimistic and cheerful – the percentage of children authors is increasing and the overall
tonality of the texts is becoming more easy-going.
The changes in the usage of language involve a change of vocabulary mostly. The
occurrance of brand labels has increased enormously.
Qualitatve text analysis methods should also be used for further studies of this
topic, as they would add colour and percision to the basic frames given using content
analysis.
